REVERED COMFORT

While the origin of the Woobie nickname for the All Purpose, or Multi-Purpose Liner issued by the U.S. Army is up for debate, the usefulness and consistent high performance is not. Introduced around 1962 for use by special forces troops in Vietnam, the general specs have remained the same: light and quick-drying batting quilted between two sheets of nylon.

Today, Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind manufactures hundreds of thousands of poncho liners for the U.S. Army using proprietary, licensed Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) and Tan 499 30 Denier Ripstop Nylon fabric with DWR (water resistant) treatment. The batting is Climashield continuous filament fiber, which gives superior loft and heat-retention compared to cut fiber batting used in other, often made-in-China knock-offs. If you loved your U.S. government-issued poncho liner, you’ll find this one is exactly the same lightweight, silky feel.

MILITARY SPECS

Use as a blanket, zip to form a sleeping bag, roll for a pillow. Leverage the water-resistant treatment and 30 Denier Ripstop Nylon to use as a tent cover to block rain, trap in heat or shield from the sun. Create a bivy shelter, carry sling or privacy divider. You can spread it as ground cover to sort and clean tactical gear or camping supplies or even use it in survival situations to collect rainwater.

The premium materials make it incredibly light-weight and compressible/packable. Laid flat, the poncho liner measures 91.5” from point to point on the long edge, and 65.5” across. The ties are 9”.

The dual slider zippers are cast aluminum have 4” nylon ties for ease of use with gloves and are non-locking for easy exit from either end of the unit when used as a sleeping bag. The tempered nylon “teeth” of the zipper are lightweight, extremely flexible, won’t scratch or scrape, and allow for quiet slider movement. Same zipper as the Marine Wet Weather Poncho Liner, NSN 8405-01-607-1111.
